National outpatient OCD and BDD Service
Our service offers national outpatient cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) sessions to people with OCD and BDD. We offer two separate specialist national services:
- firstly, for people in England and Scotland with severe OCD or BDD who have had previous medication and CBT (the NCG service), and
- secondly, a service for people who do not meet the NCG criteria but whose local services have agreed to fund treatment at our centre (the non-NCG OCD service).
For both services we will generally require the referral to come directly from that person's community mental health team (CMHT).
The NCG Service
Where it is unclear whether a person meets the NCG criteria but it appears likely that they will, a referral can be made to the NCG service for an assessment to determine which of these two services a person should be seen under. (Please click here for details of how to make a referral). Alternatively, if the person does not meet the NCG criteria, if that person's local community mental health team agrees to fund an initial assessment and further treatment we will be happy to see them under the National non-NCG OCD service where appropriate. If you would like to query this please contact Dr David Veale (david.veale@kcl.ac.uk) or Dr Blake Stobie (NCG service 0203-228-3590 or e-mail: blake.stobie@kcl.ac.uk) or Dr Elizabeth Forrester (non-NCG OCD service 0203-228-3696 or elizabeth.forrester@kcl.ac.uk) or Dr Martin Anson (BDD service).
Our clinic provides a national outpatient service for the treatment of people with severe Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and Body Dysmorphic Disorder BDD who have not maintained gains from previous treatments. This service is funded centrally by the Department of Health through the National Commissioning Group (NCG). National funding enables clients with OCD or BDD referred to this service to have their assessment funded nationally i.e. at "no cost" to local services. If they meet the NCG criteria their treatment will also be funded nationally. This means that treatment can be accessed quickly and easily, without having to obtain funding agreements through local services.
To be eligible for this treatment through our clinic, service users must:
- be based in England or Scotland
- be 18 years or over
- have severe OCD or BDD
- be seeking outpatient (i.e. not inpatient) treatment
- have failed two or more previous sets of CBT (or not made sufficient progress)
- been offered different (specified) appropriate medications for the OCD or BDD at appropriate doses and duration
- be in the care of (or referred to) your local Community Mental Health team
- be able to travel to our clinic for at least some of the therapy sessions.
The advantages of this service include:
- a relatively short waiting list for assessment and treatment
- specialist outpatient treatment at a leading centre of excellence, under the direction of Dr David Veale
- local services do not have to agree to fund the treatment if you meet the criteria for the service
Staff involved in the NCG service:
- Dr. David Veale Clinic Director, Consultant Psychiatrist in CBT
- Dr. Blake Stobie Consultant Clinical Psychologist
- Dr. Alison Roberts, Clinical Psychologist
- Ms. Rebekah Chadwick, Research Assistant

The National non-NCG OCD and BDD Service
Where people have OCD or BDD but do not fulfil NCG criteria, we will still offer treatment if OCD or BDD is their main presenting problem (which we would determine at assessment). In this case the local community mental health team or Primary Care Trust will need to agree to fund the cost of the treatment at our centre.
